GlobalSign has revoked the digital certificate of a rogue security application, which acquired the veneer of respectability by parading the credentials while trying to scam users.

Antivirus XP 2008, identified as malware by Sunbelt Software and other security firms, was digitally signed by Globalsign. Alerted by The Register on Friday, GlobalSign acted promptly to revoke the certificate, pending an investigation.

In a statement, GlobalSign said that digital code signing only establishes the origin of a piece of software, not whether or not it is malicious.

August 18, 2008 (Computerworld) More than one in every three new PCs is downgraded from Windows Vista to the older Windows XP, either at the factory or by the buyer, a performance and metrics researcher said today.

According to Devil Mountain Software Inc., which operates a community-based testing network, nearly 35% of the 3,000-plus PCs it examined had been downgraded from Vista to XP.

"Either these machines were downgraded by [sellers like] Dell or HP, or they were downgraded by the user after they got the machine," said Craig Barth, chief technology officer at Devil Mountain. "In any case, these machines are no longer running Vista."

I am still learning about this technology myself, but if you want to check it out, MS has opened more slots and expanding it to Canada, India and Ireland. This is in addition to the present list consisting of: USA, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

U.S. at risk of cyberattacks, experts say

By Brandon Griggs

(CNN) -- The next large-scale military or terrorist attack on the United States, if and when it happens, may not involve airplanes or bombs or even intruders breaching American borders.

Instead, such an assault may be carried out in cyberspace by shadowy hackers half a world away. And Internet security experts believe that it could be just as devastating to the U.S.'s economy and infrastructure as a deadly bombing.

Experts say last week's attack on the former Soviet republic of Georgia, in which a Russian military offensive was preceded by an Internet assault that overwhelmed Georgian government Web sites, signals a new kind of cyberwar, one for which the United States is not fully prepared.

"Nobody's come up with a way to prevent this from happening, even here in the U.S.," said Tom Burling, acting chief executive of Tulip Systems, an Atlanta, Georgia, Web-hosting firm that volunteered its Internet servers to protect the nation of Georgia's Web sites from malicious traffic...

A major security software story in a trusted publication goes horribly awry

I don't do a lot of reviews anymore, but I spent about 13 years in the reviews business, testing a wide variety of products. A badly-done, badly-thought out review hits me like fingernails on the blackboard. So it is with the recent Consumer Reports story on computer security and accompanying review of computer security software (the full story is available only to subscribers).

It's normally bad form to dump on another publication's work in the same field, but this particular story really bothers me. I knew about it before and I must admit that I was spurred into writing this story by a blog posting by Symantec's David Cole complaining about the review. I've had my share of bad experiences with Symantec products so I'm not inclined to give them free PR, but Cole's points are quite valid.

Conveying security information to lay people is a tricky business, much harder than with most other technology issues. Those lay people will be inclined to trust Consumer Reports, which has a sterling reputation, whether they deserve it or not. Bad information coming from such a trusted source thus becomes doubly bad and end up making things hard for everyone, even those of you in IT, as those lay people bring their false impressions with them to work.

To the review: The first, most ridiculous problem with the review is timing. This is in the September issue of CR which necessarily comes out in early August, and for which the testing was probably finished by early July, probably even earlier than that. Because of this schedule, CR reports on the 2008 editions of the security suites. But the new versions of the software suites come out in the fall in or around September. I'm scheduled to talk to two vendors this week about their impending 2009 editions. And since the entire industry has moved to a subscription model testing old versions makes even less sense. On this same subject, the ratings page in the review includes one last finger in the reader's eye as the "free suite" CR builds for comparison to the pay suites includes Avira Personal Edition Classic 7 which, a footnote adds, is "Discontinued; replaced by Free Antivirus 8, which claims enhancements." For these reasons alone, the review is essentially useless out of the gate.

LAS VEGAS -- Security researcher David Maynor hopes that his credit-card data has been stolen for the last time.

Tired of insecure sites losing his data, the chief technology officer at Errata Security, said the company plans to release a toolbar for major browsers that will check visited Web sites for obvious security issues. The add-on software will check for twenty signs -- such as the version numbers of the Web server and the content management system -- to make sure that the site has no obvious flaws.

"You don't think about checking that stuff every time you go to a Web site," Maynor said. "If you go to a site with this toolbar, you will know whether it's vulnerable" but not necessarily if it's secure.

I used to use QuickTime Player Pro on my old 98SE computer and still do but then I could see anything at Apple that played using QT.
Could not get a newer version to play on 98 either. Got XP now so downloaded the QuickTime Player 7.5 without the Itunes.
Uncheck the 3 party software and installed it.
But wow that darn QTTASK.EXE was a pain in the rear to stop. I uncheck the auto update, uncheck the show content guide etc.
WinPatrol keep poping up on the QTTASK.EXE and I keep saying no. I disabled it and removed it but it was coming back up like crazy. I then went to the Admin and had to start over again and do what I said above in the QT setting and WinPatrol but I think it's disable now or it sure better be after going tru this here you see below.

You can see it started at 08/16/2008 11:51 PM and the last one is at 08/17/2008 12:20 AM so it went on a long time.
If I counted right it happen 100 times.

Even still the QT menu is filled now with Pro links.
Open the QT Preference and the top or first tab you see is to buy QT.
Update tab not only has the update for QT but also to get and update 3 Party software.

Sure not the QT I had always used and liked in the pass.
